An inkstone is used to dissolve the solid ink. The process of dissolution is traditionally a meditative process. By slowly adding a few drops of water onto the higher, flat part of the inkstone, rubbing the inkstick with fine circular movements as well as back and forth, you achieve the right shade and volume. This part is called the plateau, or riku. The liquid ink than flows into the pool, which is called the sea - umi. Along with the inkstick, brush and paper the inkstone is considered one of the Four Treasures of Study.

The interesting thing about our inkstone is that both sides can be used, the larger pool on the back side is perfect for using liquid ink.

Wash after use in plenty of running water without detergent and store dry.
